Now I know this isn't a new movie, Dead Silence was out in theaters about 2007 but last night was the first chance I had to actually see it so I am going to make a review of the movie and a summery.
First, I'm going to have to say that I was really really surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. I usually like my horror films classic and I haven't seen a good modern horror movie since The Others. But Dead Silence, while in my opinion won't be a classic like The Shinning or The Exorcist, actually had a good storyline and a really good surprise twist.
Now I am the first to admit that I didn't have high hopes for this movie because when it came out it was being promoted as another movie from James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the men for The Saw franchise. But, when I saw that Judith Roberts would play the main character/ villan Mary Shaw. Roberts is one of the great ladies of Broadway and I knew that even if I didn't like the over-all movie, she would be a kick to watch. But there were also some really great surpise acting by former New Kid Donnie Wahlberg as an intrepid and skeptical detective; the lovely Amber Valetta as a mysterious step-mother; and the Austrailan actor Ryan Kwanten.
I admit, the movie does use a lot of horror movie cliches: puppets and dolls, a crazy old lady, a remote small town and even a few creepy kids. But it also is the strongest point of the movie. All these elements are used to create a movie that is a lot of fun to watch and is very enjoyable. Yes, the basic plot is about an old woman who wrecks revenge on the family from a small town who killed her but, the surprise ending and the enjoyable detective sub-plot is very good and it's a worth-while watch.
